I hadn't gained much information while in the panic room about what was going on. I couldn't seem to gather the real story, and I hated being lied to. The women all gave me a tale of corporate enemies, but I'd never heard of them attacking someone's house. I knew the industry could be cutthroat, but in my days making speeches to corporations, I'd never heard of it being this bad. Imagine being so competitive that you make personal attacks.
It wasnât ringing true for me. They all stuck to the same story, but I knew they were lying to me. The energy off of all of them was unmistakable. Maybe if I could figure out why then Iâd understand or learn the truth.
One thing I knew for sure was that Duncan's compound was not safe. What average person had a panic room in their house? I could see if you have tornadoes on a regular basis, youâd need a place to shelter, but this was Los Angeles. We had earthquakes, not tornadoes here.
I was a jumble of emotions when Lucas had opened that door. Iâd hoped to see Atlas, but then again, I doubted heâd come clean about what really was going on. I used the excuse that Grayson was hungry to stay back and have a moment to myself in the panic room. I needed a few moments alone with my thoughts without everyone elseâs energy interfering.
What I concluded was that I had to leave here. I couldn't go back to my house, and ultimately, I'd have to go back to Idaho. I could pick up my car and be on the road before anyone knew I was gone. If I left in the middle of the night, I could have a few hoursâ worth of a head start.
Atlas didn't know where my sister lived, so he wouldn't find me there. Yes, a child should know his father, but in this case, it was better that Grayson didn't. Something huge was going on here, and we weren't safe. I could start a new life in Idaho and be very happy.
The thought of that drive exhausted me, but it was the only way to keep my son safe. First, I needed to let my sister know that I was coming home to her.
Grayson finished up his bottle, but he wasnât going back to sleep yet. âYou were a hungry boy.â
Atlas appeared before I could do anything.
I put up a hand. âAtlas, I think I just want to get some sleep.â
He nodded. âI can take Grayson for you.â
"No, I'd like to enjoy his waking moments, then I'll put him to bed."
Atlasâs posture told me he was disappointed, but he nodded. âOkay. We can talk in the morning.â
I brushed past Atlas, hoping that my expression didn't give anything away. I had no poker face and could be read quickly, so I'd been told.
âYou okay?â he asked.
âI will be after a nightâs sleep.â
"I can keep Grayson in my room, so you get a full night," Atlas said.
